Soroptimist: the name is coined from the Latin

Sorores (sisters) who pursue the optimum (best) Soroptimists are members of Soroptimist International (SI).  This worldwide organisation for Women in Management and the Professions has nearly 100.000 members in all continents in more than 100 countries and territories. It strives for Human Rights for all, Equality, Development and Peace through International Goodwill, Understanding and Friendship.

Membership of a Soroptimistclub is not without engagement! Soroptimists strive through awareness, advocacy and action to promote human rights, especially the rights of women and children. Soroptimists support local, national and international communities. Service projects are carried out in the area of Human Rights and the Status of Women, through Education, Economic and Social Development, Environment, Health and International Goodwill and Understanding. Often projects concern the raising of funds. Devotion of own expertise can also be important.

Soroptimist Partnerships
Soroptimist International is a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO). It holds General Consultative Status within several organisations of the United Nations. Soroptimist International of Europe has a representative within the Council of Europe. Soroptimist International works in partnership with other non-governmental organisations, with agencies of the United Nations and all sectors of society.

Commitment
Soroptimist International reaffirms its commitment in principle to the: Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the Convention on the Rights of the Child; World Declaration and Plan of Action; UNCED Agenda 21.

Every year on the 10th of December all over the world Soroptimists celebrate the Soroptimist International Day: this day coincides with the Day of the Human Rights of the United Nations.
